Accidents in MIDI

I just accidentally created a 6 minute MIDI song, when I was trying to make it 3.

I will upload it later, but don’t be expecting a masterpiece.

EDIT: File uploaded. Realizing some things that need to be adjusted (ie panning to the left channel)

Refreshed

I took a weekend to myself and feel great about the upcoming week.

Actually, I think I just feel better that my midterms have passed. Do you ever get the feeling that it just wasn’t the right time for you to take an exam? During the LSAT, I felt like I could have prepared more, but something about the day felt good. All that stood between me and the test was my knowledge, no outside factors, no hindrances.

That midterm which stressed me out so much last week, something did not feel right. The day was wrong. This seems like a fatalistic way to blame something else to rationalize my stress. But aren’t we human beings that wake up feeling a unique way each morning. Maybe, I am just further rationalizing this excuse.

Anyway. Monica and I played some Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask this weekend. We will beat it soon. Look out.

Let Down

Sometimes, people speak in hyperbole and say “oh man, i failed that test”.

Sometimes, you look at the distribution for a midterm and say “oh wow, did someone really score that low”.

On the first count, I just took an econometrics midterm that did not go well.  I am not sure what to say.  I feel defeated and let down.  This time I put a lot of work into the class, but got poor results.

Last week, I got an email from my professor saying we could bring one sheet of paper with anything written on it.  Anything.  This freaked me out a bit.  Had I written a few more things on my paper, I would have scored substantially hire.  Very disappointing.

Not to sound too moany, but this is my blog, so I guess I can.  I’ve been putting a lot of hours into completing problem sets.  The one we turned in on Monday took me probably 10 hours in all.  (wtf, having a pset due the lecture before a midterm!?!?!)  I spent about 8 hours studying for this thing yesterday and came up somewhat empty handed.  I could have done better had I prepared for a few different things.  That is all guess work though, not something caused by an absence of hard work.

Well, we will see what happens.  Either there will be a great curve or I’ll drop the class to avoid failing.

Unlike the first sentence speaking in hyperbole, I really did fail without curve.  Which sucks.  Like the first sentence…to that person out there with a perfect score…yes, yes I did score that low.

Back from NY. Back on the Blog.

I just had a great trip to New York to compete in the Columbia Mock Trial tournament.  Our team was 9th out of 22 and the other NU team was 6th with three of their team members taking individual awards.

This was my second trip to NY and I enjoyed the city a lot more this time around.  Honestly, the first time I was not a big fan.  I did a bit more sight seeing and got to go out a few times this trip.  It made a big difference.

This week, I’m going to post up some photos and give a more detailed account.

Happy Monday!

Musical Skillz

Yes. I spent skills with a ‘z’. Yes. I made two blog posts in one day. Things are starting to happen.

Some of you know the following.

I purchased two Technics turntables and a Vestax mixer over the summer. I spent more than I wanted to, but I’m happy I did.

The problem. Northwestern has made me too busy. I want to practice my spinning skillz, but have not had any time. I see it as a hobby, but I enjoy doing it and practiced quite a bit this summer. I hope that I can find more time this year to play some records. Ideally, I would love to do some DJing this summer in MPLS.

Math Help: Fairly Simple Integral

I’m lazy and I’m taking an econometrics course that is forcing me to refresh my math skills. One problem – I’m having issues with what appears to be a fairly simple integral. I have a feeling integration by parts plays a role, but we’ll see as the night progresses.

If anyone can explain the steps of this…I’ll buy you a beer if we ever happen to meet (I’m looking at you Dan).

∫(-4x/(x+1)^5)

Thanks to the Ti-89, I know the answer, but yes I feel dumb for not remembering calculus.

Winter Break

It has arrived finally. I finished up my econ final and turned in a final paper for my music class last Tuesday. On Friday, I took my history exam. Today, I found out the results of my economics exam and I am extremely pleased. The only reason I’m sharing this is because 1) the class was tough and 2) it ensures I can write a thesis next quarter.

I have a few travel plans for this winter break. I’m very excited about embarking on all three of them.

First, Monica and I will be heading up to her parents’ cabin in northern Wisconsin. It will be nice to be away from things and relax a little bit. I can’t say that a whole lot of relaxing has gone on this quarter. Plus, I am excited to be going “up north”. That phrase is tossed about frequently in Minnesota with little meaning. Going up north covers a huge array of geographic areas. I am using the phrase just as wantonly, but the universal recognition of its meaning makes it a useful phrase.

Second, we’ll be heading to southern Wisconsin for Christmas. There we’ll be enjoying present opening and a lot of food with Monica’s family.

Third, we’ll be meeting my family in Vancouver for a ski trip to Whistler. I haven’t had too many opportunities to ski recently – thanks to living in Chicago and the lack of snow. Hopefully, I can get some practice when we’re up north, but otherwise I’m soooo excited for what will surely be an amazing trip. Honestly, I love skiing, it is an amazing sport. There is no better feeling than stepping out onto a mountain in your awkward boots and getting ready to carve down it.

Happy Holidays everyone and if you’re on break…enjoy it!

Crazy, Non-Sensical Video

bitsmoke: electronic HD from SOO line on Vimeo.

Okay, so I was looking at the NU Music Technology Department website and found this video. Yes, it makes no sense to me either. I guess they are trying to play music based off what they see on the screen, having prepared nothing.

Liszt (Piano Virtuoso)

I’m working on an assignment for my music class, so I’d thought I’d post this video of a guy playing music by one of the best pianists ever.

Weekend Blogging Hiatus 2 Ends

I was in southern Illinois this weekend at ISU in Bloomington, IL. For the past two years, I have been participating on the Northwestern Mock Trial team. The teams I was on last year did not experience any major victories. This year has been different.

Last week, we took first place. This week, second. I’ll be honest, I was a bit disappointed, but being successful feels great. Moreover, the team that we sent to Macalester this weekend took third place and the other team at ISU got 5th place this weekend. In other words, NU Mock Trial has been kicking ass and taking names.

NU football, on the other hand, got their butts handed to them by Ohio State. Honestly, not a surprising outcome.

A little more surprisingly, Michigan beat Minnesota!
