Blog Improvements

Every autumn in Minnesota, road construction crews scurry to finish projects before winter sets in for the next couple of months. I think every metropolitan area feels plagued by a yearly plague of frustrating road construction. America has the most extensive highway network and cold climates make that especially difficult to maintain.

A desire to improve something is part of the human condition though, regardless of some of the time it can waste in the process. This is the frustration everyone feels as they wait for a formerly 4 lane highway to be controlled by a construction worker flagging people through 1 lane. I have wanted to update my blog for some time now. I haven’t found the time. More accurately, I have not been willing to accept the cost of the time involved and the time wasted by blog improvement.

In the past couple of weeks, I have abandoned that sentiment and started working on it slowly. Now, I’m

Welcome Back

“This post was originally created and titled on September 25, 2009.”

It was then edited again in October…Now, for some reason WP is taking all of my posts and erasing everything, but the first line.

So this nice little post that I wrote to start blogging again was erased besides what you see in quotes above.

Well, here it is…I’m back.

<3 Minneapolis Viewers

Google Analytics demands that I give a shout out to my Minneapolis, MN viewers.

Keep reading and I’ll keep blogging (actually, I probably will regardless, but keep on anyway).

<3,

spencerb

Back from NY. Back on the Blog.

I just had a great trip to New York to compete in the Columbia Mock Trial tournament.  Our team was 9th out of 22 and the other NU team was 6th with three of their team members taking individual awards.

This was my second trip to NY and I enjoyed the city a lot more this time around.  Honestly, the first time I was not a big fan.  I did a bit more sight seeing and got to go out a few times this trip.  It made a big difference.

This week, I’m going to post up some photos and give a more detailed account.

Happy Monday!

spencerb.net update

So much has happened recently. I am not sure where to begin. The blogging pendulum has swung back in the other direction. Winter break was amazing. It freed my mind of school, stress, and blogging. Honestly, I loved the feelings that came with blogging on the election. I felt so passionately, but it all seems to matter very little now. There are new topics and conversations to be had, but for some reason I feel less compelled to broadcast them on this soap box.

Part of the problem, I am certain, is effort. So, I am going to make it my goal in the next few weeks to put the effort in and reinvigorate spencerb.net readership. I know that I am personally disappointed when I check tschwab’s and Dan’s blogs to find no new updates. The least I can do is try and blog so they have something to read.

In a rare-for-this-blog life update, I want to confide that I am both nervous and anxious about what the future holds. I have a lot of options and a lot of sentiment regarding each one. I am not sure how things will turn out. Perhaps, that is the scariest part?

More on this later…Check back soon!

P.S. I have some 44 and 43 related thoughts to share with you.

Finals!!

First two finals going down tomorrow!!

Needless to say, blog posting time is at a minimum. Although, there is interesting news about Detroit-related bailouts and violence in Pakistan!

Obsessive Compulsive Web Researching

OCWR…This is not a new problem for me and I don’t know how to get away from it. It seems to infiltrate my life constantly. I blame having Legos as a kid.

Let me give you an example of this problem. Computers. When it comes to building computers or buying computer parts, it requires a lot of time and money. It forces you to read review after review for numerous parts. There are some people that will just go to Best Buy and buy a computer. I can’t do that. For one thing, it is a major purchase for me to invest in. Second, I like to spend my money efficiently – get the most bang for my buck. Since computer technology changes so frequently, the value of the knowledge has a relatively short life. This requires the same research to be done almost entirely over again when the purchase comes back.

Example 2: osx86. I’m not sure about the legality of installing Mac on a PC, so I’ll refrain from going into too much detail. But I find this incredibly fascinating. Especially the prospect of installing the OS on a $300 netbook. I think it is amazing the amount of time people put into getting all of the drivers to work and streamlining the install. I have spent countless hours on this that should have been spent studying for finals.

Example 3: This blog. I hosted a server myself for a while. Tried nucleus and Joomla, then spent hours configuring Wordpress. Almost 200 posts later, this point doesn’t need much explaining.

The next example is a recent thing. I’m not sure where it came from. I’ve never known much about cars. For his birthday, my brother got a sub installed in his car. I always wanted a system (even bought a few speakers), but never had the know how to make it happen. For a while I had a new head-unit sitting around. This summer, I found a great deal (AR for slickdealers) and went for it. I installed it myself and felt great. This fall I installed headlights, a really easy job, but something I’ve never done before.

After my brother’s escapades, which I haven’t experienced yet, since I’m in chitown, I’ve been researching car audio. Now, I’m confident that I could install a sub, amp, and speakers myself. It feels great to have that knowledge and the power to act on it. Except for one thing – it has been taking up a lot of time as its grabbed hold of my interest.

Next summer (in Minneapolis), I’m going to save up and make the upgrade! Any help would be great (I’m looking at you Dan). It shouldn’t be too hard, but it will be exciting to accomplish it.

Weekend Blogging Hiatus 2 Ends

I was in southern Illinois this weekend at ISU in Bloomington, IL. For the past two years, I have been participating on the Northwestern Mock Trial team. The teams I was on last year did not experience any major victories. This year has been different.

Last week, we took first place. This week, second. I’ll be honest, I was a bit disappointed, but being successful feels great. Moreover, the team that we sent to Macalester this weekend took third place and the other team at ISU got 5th place this weekend. In other words, NU Mock Trial has been kicking ass and taking names.

NU football, on the other hand, got their butts handed to them by Ohio State. Honestly, not a surprising outcome.

A little more surprisingly, Michigan beat Minnesota!

A Post on Blogging

I just wanted to say that I’m really enjoying the dialogue that has been going on between our blogs.

Keep up the great work!

TSchwab: 3:27 – Dan Schoppe, His Wallet, Jesus…

I just found this on Tony’s old blog via Google.

“Spencer just called me. He had an amazing story worthy or replication on this blog. Here it goes.

Dan and Spencer are on their way to a bike trail somewhere near Mankato. They got to the trail when Dan realized his wallet was gone. A couple had asked Dan and Spencer for directions and they were acting weird about it, so Dan was afraid they might have somehow stolen his wallet. Spencer and Dan proceeded to dig through Spencer’s car in an attempt to find the billfold in question, with no luck.

As these stories about lost items always go, the unfortunate victim generally recalls various ambiguous details about what they were doing earlier that could be clues, but are never conclusive. Dan realized that he had some change on his BK Lounge tray that he threw away, so he decided his wallet may have been on the tray as well. Spencer unloaded the bikes and Dan took his vehicle back to the BK. He got there as a young employee was taking the trash out. Stop! our hero yelled, desperately wanting to investigate the contents of the garbage. The manager comes out of the BK, probably after he made some chicks go home because they didn’t have coups to get in (Not without coups baby, not without coups…). They start going through the trash together (awwww, so sweet). The manager informs Dan that he is lucky because he told the young employee to take the trash out 15 minutes ago! Damns, laziness trumps responsibility in this case (isn’t that always the case?)! The manager retreats into his domain, leaving Dan and the employee alone (oooooohhhh). Dan finds his wallet amongst the waste products! Success!

And then… he gazes upward, noticing the majestic nametag of the young employee. His name… Jesus. Salvation for those who believe! Damnation for the unbelievers! Repent! Repent!

Jesus is so damn cool…”
